After rap-forward releases "Love Drug," "Pisces Virgo" and "No Expectations," the Asheville artist explains why instrumental music became her preferred language for mood, memory and cinematic storytelling.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - ncarol.com -- KayeDinero still writes.

She just doesn't always put the words in the song anymore.

Earlier releases including "Love Drug," "Pisces Virgo" and "No Expectations" featured KayeDinero rapping and using her own voice more directly.

Her newer catalog has moved increasingly toward instrumental music.

That shift was intentional.

"I didn't run out of words," KayeDinero said. "I changed where I put them."

Today, much of that writing lives in her work as an author and poet, while music has become a different kind of language.

Let the Instruments Talk

For KayeDinero, instrumental music creates room that lyrics sometimes fill too quickly.

She is increasingly drawn to the interaction between piano, strings, percussion, synths, horns and other textures—and how those sounds can establish emotion without explaining it.

"A lyric can tell you what happened," she said. "An instrumental can build the room and let you decide what happened there."

That philosophy has shaped projects including Human Error, Kulture Metrics, "Appalachia," "French Broad" and her newest release, "Checkmate."

Her score-driven influences include composers and instrumental artists such as Hans Zimmer, Joshua Kyan Aalampour, Kenny G and Josh Vietti.

From Rapper to Composer?

KayeDinero doesn't necessarily see the transition that way.

She still writes lyrics and poetry and hasn't ruled out using her voice again.

Instead, she views instrumental production as an expansion of what songwriting can mean.

"I love rap. I love writing," she said. "But I also love when a bass line says something, when strings create tension, or when one piano note completely changes the mood."

That freedom has become especially important as her visual work grows.

KayeDinero now pairs original music with her own aerial cinematography, including recent visuals filmed above Western North Carolina for "Appalachia" and "French Broad."

"Instrumentals give the image room to breathe," she said.

She Still Has Something to Say

The difference is that KayeDinero no longer believes every idea requires words.

"Sometimes I want to write the sentence," she said. "Sometimes I want to create the feeling that existed before anybody knew how to describe it."
