TikTok's Song of Summer Is 15 Years Old. KayeDinero Is Betting on Memory Too

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - ncarol.com -- One of the biggest music stories right now is not new music.

It is memory.

TikTok's global Song of the Summer came from Katy Perry's older catalog, while other throwback records also found new audiences through edits, trends and rediscovery.

KayeDinero understands the appeal.

Her next three releases deliberately look backward before moving forward.

The first is "Key-Air-Rah," an instrumental centered on the pronunciation and history of her birth name, Kierra.

Next comes "Detroit WestSide," rooted in childhood memories from Detroit's west side.

The final release in the sequence is "Promote Yourself," a message to independent creators building careers without waiting for somebody else to create momentum.

"Nostalgia doesn't mean you're stuck," KayeDinero said. "Sometimes looking backward reminds you what you're carrying forward."

WHEN THE PAST BECOMES NEW AGAIN

For KayeDinero, nostalgia is personal rather than retro for retro's sake.

"Key-Air-Rah" represents identity.

"Detroit WestSide" represents origin.

"Promote Yourself" represents what came next.

"It's three pieces of the same story," she said. "Who I am, where I came from and what I learned about building for myself."

The sequence continues an active stretch of releases and visuals that has included "RetroArch," "Kool-Aid," "Banks," "French Broad" and "Appalachia."

Her recent visual work has moved between Blue Ridge aerial cinematography, Asheville nightlife and increasingly personal references to Detroit and family history.

FALL IS ANOTHER MEMORY WAITING TO HAPPEN

With Western North Carolina entering fall, KayeDinero plans to keep filming as the landscape changes.

"I'm already thinking about what these mountains are going to look like when the colors hit," she said. "That becomes another memory, another visual and probably another record."
