DURHAM, N.C. - ncarol.com -- MAAME, Inc. is proud to announce its 2nd Annual Black Maternal Health Walk, Run, & Stroll, a community-driven event dedicated to raising awareness and support for improved maternal health outcomes. This gathering will be a fun-filled day for participants of all ages featuring a diverse lineup of vendors, food trucks, and engaging activities for kids including a bounce house, face paint, and games. The Walk takes place on Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 10 AM to 2 PM at the WG Pearson Center in Durham.
Whether walking, running, or strolling, every step contributes to MAAME, Inc.'s mission of providing equitable, accessible, and culturally relevant maternal support services. "We need each other now more than ever as we navigate a time of shrinking federal support for nonprofits and rising community needs due to policies that fail to uplift families," said Maya Jackson, Executive Director of MAAME, Inc. "MAAME has been a lighthouse for the underserved, providing a network that ensures families are never left to navigate maternal health challenges alone. Since 2017, we remain steadfast in our commitment to fill in the gaps for our community." Black women are 3.5x more likely to succumb to life threatening challenges while pregnant and up to a year postpartum (Associated Press, 2023). In a country with so many resources, this alarming disparity highlights the systemic issues that impact maternal health across all communities. Addressing these inequities is essential for improving outcomes for all American women.

Maternal mortality rate disparities have been recognized as a crisis in the U.S. that continues to disproportionately impact families in historically excluded communities. As access to essential services becomes more uncertain, MAAME, Inc. remains a beacon of hope, providing care with the It Takes a Village program—a wraparound model that provides community-based doula support throughout pregnancy and postpartum, maternal mental health peer support, lactation clinic, tackles food insecurity, and provides education for local families. MAAME, Inc.'s 2nd Annual Black Maternal Health Walk, Run, & Stroll is more than an event—it's a chance for the community to stand together and build a network for our families from pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond.
