CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 23, 2025 ~ Duke Energy, one of America's largest energy holding companies, has successfully managed record-breaking power usage in the Carolinas service area during an extended period of sustained cold temperatures. According to preliminary numbers, Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress achieved a new combined peak usage record on January 23rd, with 37,387 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity consumption. This surpassed the previous record of 36,670 MWh set on February 20th, 2015.
The Carolinas service area experienced approximately 65 hours of freezing or below freezing temperatures beginning on January 20th, which is the longest stretch of cold weather the area has seen since January 2018. Despite this challenging weather, Duke Energy's crews and grid operators were able to generate and deliver reliable service to customers.
Ben Harrison, Duke Energy's vice president of grid operations - planning and operations, commended the efforts of the company's employees for their hard work around the clock. "When temperatures are cold, our customers count on us to generate and deliver reliable power," said Harrison. "We had a strong plan in place and have worked to help ensure we can reliably serve our customers in all types of weather."

Duke Energy relies on a diverse energy mix including nuclear, natural gas, hydro renewables, and coal to meet growing energy needs across the state. As demand for electricity continues to increase due to customer and economic growth in the region, this diverse mix will be crucial.
In addition to providing reliable service during extreme weather conditions, Duke Energy also emphasizes the importance of energy efficiency year-round. As temperatures drop during winter months, small adjustments can make a big difference in managing energy use and avoiding bill surprises.
Some tips from Duke Energy include reducing your thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting and setting your water heater to 120 degrees or less. Other suggestions include using ceiling fans in a clockwise direction to push warm air back down into the room, covering drafty windows with plastic or insulating drapes, and taking advantage of personalized energy usage alerts through the Duke Energy app.
