One community is bridging generations, one handwritten letter at a time.
NEWTON, N.C. - ncarol.com -- On a sunny afternoon in May, laughter and hugs filled the air as 33 fifth graders from Taylorsville Elementary School finally met the pen pals they had been writing to all school year—residents of Abernethy Laurels senior living community in Newton, NC. It was a joyful culmination of a monthslong exchange of handwritten letters, stories, and life lessons that spanned generations.
The Pen Pal Program, the brainchild of Regina and Dick Bruns and their friend Liz Cronan, began in 2019 to connect seniors with local schoolchildren through the lost art of letter writing. Though the program was briefly interrupted by the pandemic, it resumed shortly after and continues to grow.
Each month, seniors write a personal, handwritten letter in cursive to their young pen pals—sharing stories of past adventures, careers, and cherished memories. In return, the fifth graders respond with letters of their own, practicing penmanship and, perhaps more importantly, forming meaningful bonds with someone who sees the world through a different lens.

The letter writing continues through fall and winter, building anticipation for the in-person meeting at the end of the school year. For many students, it's the first time they've written or received a letter in the mail. For the residents, it's a cherished opportunity to share wisdom, spark joy, and feel deeply connected to the younger generation.
What began as a simple idea—to connect young students with older adults through handwritten letters—has blossomed into an experience that leaves lasting impressions on both sides. For the students, it's a chance to practice communication skills and develop empathy. For the seniors, it's a reminder that their stories still matter and that their lives continue to inspire.
Now, Abernethy Laurels is inviting summer camps, homeschool groups, youth organizations, and classrooms across the region to join in the joy. Whether it's a single letter or an ongoing exchange, these handwritten notes make a world of difference for residents—and provide a meaningful way for young people to engage, connect, and learn through service.
