ATLANTA, July 26, 2024 ~ In a recent press conference at the 2024 ACC Kickoff in Charlotte, N.C., Clemson University Head Coach and Walk-On's franchisee, Dabo Swinney, expressed his disappointment in the NCAA's proposed restructuring of college scholarships. This regulation change would greatly limit opportunities for walk-on athletes, who are vital to the fabric and competitive nature of collegiate teams.
Coach Swinney, a former walk-on himself, stated that there are not many coaches who want 105 scholarships. He emphasized the importance of keeping walk-ons on the team and how difficult it would be to manage such a large number of players. He also pointed out that while this change may benefit sports like baseball and soccer, it would have a negative impact on football by essentially eliminating walk-ons.
"The unintended consequence is it basically eliminates your walk-ons," Swinney said. "There's no coach that wants that." He went on to express his disappointment in the potential loss of walk-ons, who simply want to be a part of the team and help with practice. "It saddens me that that is probably going to go away," he added.
Brandon Landry, founder of Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux and a former college walk-on athlete at Louisiana State University (LSU), shares Swinney's sentiments. In an Instagram post, Landry reiterated Walk-On's corporate position and stated that the proposed cap on football rosters threatens to undermine their ethos of determination, resilience, and hard work leading to extraordinary opportunities.

Former NFL quarterback and co-owner of Walk-On's, Drew Brees also expressed his concerns about the potential impact on walk-on athletes. "Walk-ons bring heart, dedication, and an unmatched work ethic to their teams," he said. "Limiting roster sizes impacts these players' dreams and the dynamic of every team they uplift."
Walk-on athletes have long been an integral part of college sports culture. Their stories of perseverance and passion inspire fans and players alike, showing that success is possible through hard work. Many walk-ons have not only earned scholarships but also become pivotal players and even professional athletes, enriching the competitive environment of sports.
In line with their commitment to supporting walk-on athletes, Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux launched the Walk-On Scholarship program earlier this year. This initiative aims to recognize and support the dedication and crucial contributions of walk-ons across all sports. It is a testament to celebrating and supporting the walk-on spirit in everyone.
Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux calls on all stakeholders within college athletics to come together and find a solution that allows walk-on athletes to continue contributing to their teams and pursuing their dreams. The brand pledges to continue its support for the traditions that give college sports their unique character and competitive edge.
