WINSTON ~ Winston-Salem, N.C. - As the new school year approaches, Wake Forest University is taking a proactive approach to mental healthcare for its student-athletes. The university has announced a partnership with OnBalance, an intelligence platform designed to improve mental healthcare management in collegiate athletics.
OnBalance's founder and CEO, Walt Norley, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating that it is a significant step in their mission to revolutionize mental healthcare in college sports. "By implementing our technology, we provide care teams with actionable insights for the treatment of student-athletes," Norley said. "This is especially important as they navigate the various pressures of social media, NIL (Name, Image and Likeness), and academics while striving for peak sports performance."
The need for improved mental health support for student-athletes is becoming increasingly urgent on college campuses. According to recent studies, these athletes face higher rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges compared to their non-athlete peers. OnBalance aims to address this crisis by providing real-time data, predictive analytics, and comprehensive care tools that foster an environment where athletes feel heard and supported.

John Currie, Wake Forest University Vice President & Director of Athletics, emphasized the importance of prioritizing student-athlete well-being in their pursuit of a World Class Student-Athlete Experience. "We are grateful to partner with OnBalance to help our tremendous sports performance and medicine staff navigate the difficult issue of mental health more effectively on a daily basis," Currie said.
The OnBalance platform was developed by Norley in collaboration with top clinical experts in collegiate athletics. It is fully compliant with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), and NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) standards. The platform combines a "Care In One Place"™ solution with meaningful intelligence driven by technology, allowing stakeholders to monitor and manage athletes' mental health.
Norley explained that their mission is to bring proactive insights and intelligence to mental healthcare, preventing athletes from falling through the cracks. "Wake Forest's commitment to using data to drive better mental health outcomes sets a new standard for collegiate sports," he said.
With OnBalance, Wake Forest Athletics can lead the way in addressing mental health in college sports and ensuring that their student-athletes thrive both mentally and physically. This partnership marks a significant step towards revolutionizing mental healthcare for student-athletes with data-driven insights.
