Breaking Ground, Building Legacy - on Beatties Ford Road Corridor
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - ncarol.com -- CHARLOTTE, NC — The Kappa Foundation of Charlotte will officially break ground on Charter Hall, home of the Dr. Charles A. Tollett, Jr. Family Achievement Center, on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 5409 Beatties Ford Road in Charlotte. This historic milestone marks the next chapter in the Foundation's primary and progressive commitment, as the philanthropic arm of the Charlotte Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., to youth development, family support, mentorship, leadership development, and community advancement throughout the Beatties Ford corridor and greater Charlotte community.
The groundbreaking represents the creation of a growing community campus that will include both the existing Kappa Hall and the newly constructed Charter Hall. Together, these facilities will expand the Foundation's capacity to serve youth and families through Guide Right mentoring programs, leadership development initiatives, STEM and academic enrichment opportunities, scholarship programming, family resource services, and community meeting and event space. Charter Hall will serve as a permanent home for many of the Foundation's flagship programs while also creating additional opportunities for community engagement and sustainable revenue generation that supports the Foundation's mission.

The Foundation raised nearly $1 million towards the project, greater than 50% of the estimated project costs, from its members and signature fundraising projects, like the Healthy Achievement 5K. The facility is named in honor of the Dr. Charles A. Tollett, Jr., whose leadership gift and commitment to the Foundation helped make this vision possible. TD Bank has arranged additional institutional financing for the project.
"This is more than a building," said Chris Sherman, President of the Kappa Foundation of Charlotte. "This is a community investment center rooted in mentorship, education, and family achievement for Charlotte youth. Charter Hall will help us expand our impact, strengthen our programs, and create opportunities for generations of young people and families to come."
The Foundation is actively seeking major gift support from community members, corporations, foundations, and community partners who share a vision for investing in Charlotte's future, particularly on the west side of the city through the Beatties Ford corridor. "This is a very bold and important undertaking by the Foundation," said Lance Johnson, Special Advisor to the Foundation. "The members stepped into this project from the first idea through innovation, iteration and implementation. We know our executed vision and mission is aligned with community partners and donors across Charlotte, regionally and nationally – we invite all to join in supporting this project."
