Group desires to add-on additional team leaders in key cities across the globe
VENTURA, Calif. - ncarol.com -- For more than six weeks, Global Team Corona Busters and Team Corona Busters have donated more than 10,000 hand-sewn, durable cloth face masks to over 50 hospitals and medical facilities in Southern California and parts of the United States to stop the spread of COVID-19. The group, originally launched on Facebook as a grassroots campaign, has more than 1,000 members from 21 countries and continues to grow as a brand.
Sheri Cecil and her daughter Eleanor Bakewell launched Ventura-based Global Team Corona Busters after the two saw the need for personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical professionals fighting the pandemic on the front lines, particularly in their hometown.
"We're honored that our efforts have inspired many in our community and around the world to sew masks to address the PPE needs of health care workers," Cecil says. Since March 20, 2020, she and Bakewell have made approximately 1,000 masks per week, while volunteers around Ventura County have contributed more than 3,000 masks to the cause.

Recipients of the masks, which must withstand vigorous washing and sterilization, include Ventura County Medical Center; Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, Calif.; Ronald Reagan UCLA Hospital in Los Angeles; Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center in Woodland Hills, Calif; University of Chicago Medical Center in Naperville, Ill.; Oregon Veterans' Home in The Dalles, The Dalles, Ore.; and Commonwealth Home Health in Richmond, Ky,; in addition to many others recipients regionally and nationwide.
Global Team Corona Busters has also made masks for children and donated them to Make-a-Wish of the Tri-Counties in nearby Camarillo, Calif.
Participants in Global Team Corona Busters span across the U.S., with 87 percent of the group's members being women. Team leaders currently work across California and internationally in Mexico, Colombia, and Spain. Those interested in becoming a team leader can sign up at https://www.teamcoronabusters.org/team-leader-request-form.
Cecil notes most of the users of the masks are primarily physicians and nurses at these and other medical facilities in the nation. "Since our beginning, we have seen an increase in requests from caregivers and individual healthcare workers nationwide," Cecil says. "We have begun to distribute masks to a variety of recipients; however, our focus has always been to provide masks for doctors and nurses in our hospital ICU's and emergency departments."

She adds medical organizations have asked Global Team Corona Busters to sew surgical caps for these health care professionals. "We may opt to sew these in the future, but there is still such a high demand for masks everywhere," Cecil says. "Fabric is expensive, and our supplies are depleting. We are extremely fortunate to receive some supply and cash donations but need more to continue our efforts."
