CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 31, 2023 ~ As the remnants of Hurricane Idalia exit the Carolinas, Duke Energy has reported that more than 20,000 customers are without power. The company is working to restore power to all impacted customers by Thursday night.
Jason Hollifield, Duke Energy's Carolinas storm director, said "We have more than 4,000 personnel in place to continue power restoration today. We are committed to working as quickly and safely as possible to get the lights back on for our customers and we thank them for their patience."
Since the storm began rolling through the Carolinas Wednesday, more than 60,000 customers have had their power restored. Duke Energy is providing estimated power restoration times to customers once damage assessments are completed and will provide regular updates through emails, text messages, outbound phone calls, social media and its website.
Duke Energy urges people to stay away from any fallen or sagging power lines and consider all lines energized as well as trees or limbs in contact with them. If a power line falls across a car that you are in, stay in the car unless there is an immediate life-threatening situation such as a fire. If you must get out of the car due to such an emergency, do your best to jump clear of the car and land on both feet with no part of your body touching the car when your feet touch the ground.
