Bunk 57 Ministries partners with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Sherriff's Department to kick off its 1st annual "Returning Home Backpack" program.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - ncarol.com -- Ira Lawrence, founder of Bunk 57 Ministries will partner with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Sheriff's Department, Saturday, December 7, 2019 to kick off their first annual "Returning Home Backpack" drive for returning citizens.

"Reintegration into the community is crucial to providing stability and long-term success for our returning citizens.    Some returning citizens do not have basic clothing or hygiene items upon release.    Our goal is to help formerly incarcerated citizens return to their communities with dignity,    Recidivism increases during transition from prison back into the community because many times, returning citizens to do not the support that I had when I came home.   That support includes basic items such as clothing, housing and most of all a job" said Lawrence.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics studies have found high rates of recidivism among released prisoners. ... An estimated 68% of released prisoners were arrested within 3 years, 79% within 6 years, and 83% within 9 years.

Lawrence hopes to make a difference in lowering the recidivism in the Charlotte community by offering mentoring programs and basic need support during the transition phase and most importantly, partnering with the community and law enforcement to make a change.
