WILMINGTON, N.C. - ncarol.com -- Ccelebrated public health advocate Erin Brockovich recently hosted a town hall in Wilmington about her years-long fight to find justice for those who fell ill after being exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Brockovich has joined forces with Camp Lejeune Legal, along with

retired Marine Master Sergeant Jerry Ensminger and "Camp Lejeune baby" and male breast cancer survivor Mike Partain, to host a series of public town halls across the country to inform those who might have been exposed about their rights.

For decades, high levels of cancer-causing chemicals leached into the groundwater at
Camp Lejeune, the largest Marine base on the East Coast. Indiscriminate dumping of
waste into landfills, leaking fuel tanks and other sources of contamination poisoned the

illnesses.

For years, the Marine Corps knew about contaminated wells but did not shut them down. Even after the pollution was confirmed, the Defense Department obstructed efforts to study the extent of the harm. In August, President Biden signed into law the Honoring our PACT Act, which includes the Camp Lejeune Justice Act. Now, victims who lived or worked for at least 30 days at Camp Lejeune, or who were exposed in-utero, between 1953 and 1987 can take legal action against the U.S. government for their exposure to toxic water on the base.

"(This) is the largest environmental contamination in the history of the United States of America," Brockovich said. "This was a coverup. The United States Government knew and they failed to tell you, and that infuriates me."

About Erin Brockovich
Erin Brockovich has spent years seeking justice for Camp Lejeune victims. In 2012, she pushed for the successful passage of a bill to provide healthcare for Camp Lejeune victims. Brockovich achieved fame decades earlier by helping to win a $333 million settlement for victims in a separate case of water poisoning by Pacific Gas & Electric.
