NAGS HEAD, N.C. - ncarol.com -- Artist David Hunter is a master in the art of printmaking known as etchings. What is the art of etching? It's a 3 step process in which the artist takes the art from sketch… to plate… to press. Here's a quick look.
From Sketch to Plate…
"When I created the 'Oregon Inlet Lifesaving Station etching," says Hunter, "I began with a pencil sketch on paper to get an idea of the image I want. Then I paint an acid resistant coating on a clean smooth polished zinc plate."
"I do a freehand drawing through the coating with a sharp needle so each line exposes the plate until the whole image of my art is done," Hunter explains.
…finishing the plate to Press the etched art.
Hunter places the plate in nitric acid... it bites away at the lines he drew recessing them into the metal plate. When the plate is etched Hunter takes it out of the acid and removes the coating.

"It's the print I create from this plate that's the final definitive artwork," says Hunter. He smears a special ink over the plate into the etched lines, and hand-presses it through his printing press. Original etched art is created!
