Jamestown residents on Knollwood Dr. are seeing their homes demolished for Dam repairs.
GREENSBORO, N.C. - ncarol.com -- -- The City of High Point is trying to demolish and buy the childhood home and land from Sal Taro Jr. at 207 Knollwood Dr. The City of High Point needs to move construction equipment immediately to rebuild the 100-year-old City Lake Dam.
Sal Taro Jr., a Jamestown resident of 64 years who happened to marry his beautiful high school sweetheart raised in the same city, refuses to settle and lose any sentimental ties to his childhood home. "Having the City demolish the homeplace where I grew up, and my house has too much sentimental value that you can't put a price on," he says. Taro's father was the owner and President of the South Eastern Marble & Tile company, and as Sal Taro Jr (https://about.me/SalTaroJr). states, "work of art is all inside this house on Knollwood Dr. It is the last thing standing that keeps me still connected to my parents." When entering the house, you first notice the beautiful Italian Marble & Terrazzo floors created by his father. The two homes alongside Taro's have already been purchased and demolished immediately, but Sal Taro is holding out.

Taro's parents, Father, Sal Taro Sr., and Mother, Alam Liggins Taro, have passed, so the house has great memories of growing up in a friendly neighborhood with friends, playing sports, swimming, and overall delighting memories worth fighting for. Sal Taro Jr. rents out the house to tenants today on yearly leases.
Sal Taro Sr.'s father bought the land in 1952 and built the house in 1954. The home backs up to the lake with the Dam on the left side of the backyard area. Construction access is needed to do the repairs on the Dam. As a property owner and speaking with other owners on Knollwood Drive, Taro says if no one was willing to sell, they feared a possible legal action by eminent domain. Sal Taro Jr (https://about.me/SalTaroJr). says it has not come to this, and hopefully, the two homes already sold will be enough room for the construction access.
According to Yes Weekly's article, in August of 2022, construction began on the Dam in the 1920s, where Deep River's east and west forks converged, creating a lake for a 1.5-billion-gallon water supply for High Point. In the '20s, there was no regulatory agency to standardize how dams were built. The Dam at High Point City held up for 100 years so it is inevitable that time and the weather elements have worn down the structure. According to HP, the Dam does not meet current state safety requirements for stability or spillway capacity and has several other safety-related deficiencies. The house right beside Sal Taro's house was demolished within hours by giant bulldozers, and with it, all memories of the beautiful families that had lived next door.
