Jan Howery, a native of Southwest Virginia, writes with an Appalachian influence. Her many writings have been featured in the anthologies Broken Petals, Wild Daisies, Scattered Flowers, Daffodil Dreams, and the annual Jan-Carol Publishing anthology series, These Haunted Hills. Her other writings include fashion and health columns for the Appalachian regional magazine for women, Voice Magazine for Women. Gone Before Breakfast is Howery's debut novel.

Gone Before Breakfast is rooted in a southwestern Virginia town, Abindgon, Virginia. It unfolds when brothers Jackson and Brandon Taylor vanish without a trace at the Charlotte International Airport, their girlfriends Jan and Allison are left heartbroken and confused. The women have no idea where the brothers went, or how they disappeared. After years of no clues, Jan and Allison move on with their lives. Allison soon meets an investigator who reveals that there's a secret ongoing investigation into the brothers' disappearance. Through twists and turns, Allison discovers the truth and learns that their boyfriends were in danger.
