Several developments make finding apartments for rent easier in Germany's capital city, Berlin

BERLIN - ncarol.com -- Moving to Berlin is an attractive proposition. The cost of living is comparably low and opportunities for work and play are plentiful. Some years ago, finding an apartment for rent was a challenge: there were hardly any agents with online offerings that allowed previewing available homes and flats with just an Internet connection. At that time it was mostly a matter of hooking up with an estate agent in the capital to pare down offerings of interest and then visit the prospective homes in person. Thanks to hi-res photos, videos and 3D virtual tours, most offerings are now detailed and easily accessible on the web.

This change has also been driven by important developments in the city itself. Firstly, ever since Berlin regained its status as the capital city of Germany, the economy has taken off. Next to a slew of startups, Berlin's significant industries include IT, pharmaceuticals, biomedical engineering, clean tech, biotechnology, construction, and electronics. Many international tech firms such as Google, Amazon and Tesla are increasing their footprint in the capital. In addition, Berlin is lined with embassies and consulates that bring in a stream of diplomats from across the world.

Berlin has thus become a magnet which in turn has led to a shortage of homes and surging rental costs.  To counter this trend, new legislation in recent years attempted to freeze, cap or lower rental prices. One of the legal loopholes landlords discovered was to rent their assets on a furnished basis. As a result of these trends, online estate agents mushroomed. Despite a lack of housing in general, people moving to Berlin are now able to easily scout out rental accommodation suiting their taste and wallet.
