Kuester Management Group shares ideas for getting more members interested in serving on the HOA board.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - ncarol.com -- The HOA board is the backbone of the community. It is the team tasked with managing financials, setting rules and expectations, and making decisions in the best interest of members. The board plays an integral role in the ongoing operation and success of the HOA. Kuester Management Group has released a statement to the press regarding ways HOAs can generate more interest from members in serving on the board.
"It can be easy for members to become complacent because there is already an effective board in place," says Bryan Kuester, President of Kuester Management Group. "But what happens when term limits are reached, or board members begin stepping down? Who will take their place?"
It is important for the HOA board to build and maintain a pipeline of members who are interested in serving in a leadership role, says Kuester. This starts by getting to know members and understanding their strengths, interests, and abilities. Current board members can start by identifying people they think might be a good fit, talking to them about what it's like to be on the board, and asking if they would be willing to serve.

The board can also give regular updates about projects it is working on, changes that are being made, and goals it has for the community. This can show members the good work that is achieved, how rewarding it can be, and what they could be involved in moving forward.
Encouraging members to share their opinions and ideas is also beneficial. Let them know that their voices are being heard and that their suggestions are valued. Serving on the board can be a great way for them to make a greater impact and potentially bring some of their ideas to fruition.
"Start slowly," says Kuester. "Members might not be ready to jump right in and become part of the board, but they can start by volunteering for committees and learning more about how the HOA and board operate. This can be a great segue into taking on other leadership roles."
Kuester works with HOAs across the Carolinas to operate more effectively, enhance communication, and engage members.
