Kuester Management Group shares tips on how to have a safe and fun Halloween while still following recommended guidelines.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - ncarol.com -- Halloween in less than month away, and many homeowners associations (HOAs) are grappling with how to celebrate. Should it be trick-or-treating as usual? Should additional safety measures be put in place? Should alternate plans be made? Kuester Management Group has released a statement to the press regarding different ways communities can celebrate while staying safe.
"First and foremost, associations should listen to the recommendations for their community and state," says Bryan Kuester, President of Kuester Management Group. "Every area is affected differently, and some cities and states are seeing cases rise, while other have seen them fall. It is also a personal choice for what homeowners feel comfortable with. Some may choose to participate while others do not, and that's okay."

One way that everyone can get safely involved in the celebration is through decorating, says Kuester. Hold a contest and vote on which home members think is decorated the best. Encourage families to walk through the neighborhood and enjoy everyone's hard work as they get into the spirit. Members could also submit pictures for a costume contest or a pumpkin-carving contest. Come up with different categories to award multiple prizes and get more members involved.
If traditional trick-or-treating is a concern, come up with creative alternatives. Families could anonymously leave a small bag of treats on each other's doorsteps, or create a candy hunt for their own kids in their home or yard. It's not quite the same as going out with friends, but it can still be fun and exciting.
"The HOA could also host a virtual Halloween party," says Kuester. "Set up an online event where members can log-on from their own home and play games, dance to music, show off their costumes, and chat with one another. There could be several breakout rooms to accommodate multiple interests and activities."
