WILMINGTON, N.C. - ncarol.com -- At Elderhaus in Wilmington, North Carolina, every day is an opportunity to make life more meaningful for older adults. Heather Muncie, a dedicated Recreational Therapist, embodies this mission wholeheartedly. Her role goes far beyond planning engaging activities like sports, art, music, and community outings—Heather is deeply committed to nurturing the emotional, physical, and social well-being of each participant. She listens, learns, and connects with every individual who walks through Elderhaus' doors.
One of those individuals is Lance Saunders, a 61-year-old Wilmington resident with a gentle spirit and a big heart. Born and raised in Queens, New York, Lance is a proud Yankees and Giants fan. He spent 19 years working for the New York Transit Authority Subway System, a career that reflected his love for movement, travel, and the rhythm of city life.

After retiring, Lance dreamed of continuing his journey—this time, by sea. He longed to go on a cruise, to feel the breeze, see new horizons, and share the experience with loved ones. Through careful saving and determination, Lance made that dream a reality and booked his first cruise. But when one of his loved ones couldn't afford to join him, Lance made a selfless decision: he gave up his spot and used his savings to help them go instead.
Years later, when asked about his dream, Lance still says simply, "To go on a cruise."
With limited income and no way to fund another trip, Lance's dream seemed out of reach—until Heather stepped in. Recognizing the depth of Lance's wish, she submitted his story to the EveryAge Foundation's Grant a Dream™ program, which helps make meaningful moments possible for older adults.
Knowing a Caribbean cruise wasn't feasible, Heather proposed a beautiful alternative: a scenic riverboat ride with Cape Fear Riverboats aboard the Henrietta, Wilmington's largest and most beloved tour boat. This local excursion offers a charming sightseeing cruise along the historic Cape Fear River, complete with live narration, an open-air upper deck, climate-controlled lower deck, light snacks, and Southern hospitality at its finest.

Lance lives near the boat launch and often watches others sail away—his own dream drifting just out of reach. But thanks to Heather's compassion and the support of Elderhaus and EveryAge, Lance will soon board the Henrietta for his very own sightseeing adventure. After the cruise, he'll enjoy a delicious lunch and receive transportation to and from the dock, courtesy of Elderhaus staff.
This moment is more than just a boat ride—it's a testament to the power of empathy, community, and the belief that every dream matters.
