Carolina Arbors' Residents Participate in Fundraising for Durham Police Department's Blue Benevolence Fund

DURHAM, N.C. - ncarol.com -- Del Webb, the nation's leading builder of active adult communities for those 55 and older, is pleased to announce that community involvement amongst residents of Carolina Arbors has been praise-worthy for the Durham Police Department's (DPD's) Blue Benevolence Fund, raising almost $58,000 from the program's inception in 2015 through 2019. This year's fundraising campaign for Blue Benevolence will take place in September at Carolina Arbors.

"The residents of Carolina Arbors have previously held a very well-attended event in honor of National Night Out, a community-building campaign across the US that promotes police-community partnerships," said David Carrier, president of PulteGroup's Raleigh division. "Carolina Arbors promotes Blue Benevolence as a part of their National Night Out observance. In this year's COVID 19 environment, the decision was made to cancel the in-person event. Knowing the impact these residents have made over the years, I'm confident that they will make yet another generous contribution to the DPD during this year's campaign."

The Blue Benevolence Fund was created in 2015 to receive financial donations for specialized DPD programs that help advance the ideals of community-oriented policing and strengthen police-community relations. These programs include Mental Health Outreach; Police Explorers, a career-training program for youth aged 14 to 20; Victim Assistance;  Citizens Police Academy, a program offering residents first-hand knowledge of police operations and services; Honor Guard, a group of highly-trained officers who volunteer to render ceremonial services at events and special programs; Motor Unit, a program in which officers enforce and educate to minimize incidents of speeding and driving while impaired; and K9 Teams, a program in which police canines and their handlers are trained to track suspects, locate missing persons, search buildings, give public presentations, and more.

Curt Young is the current Carolina Arbors' Neighborhood Watch president, with Jim Briggs serving as secretary; together, they are co-chairs of the 2020 Blue Benevolence fundraiser within Carolina Arbors.

"Our 'active 55+' residents of Carolina Arbors are involved in the Durham community and very glad to support organizations we believe in," says Young. "We're very pleased to have seen and heard stories of how the Blue Benevolence funds have helped many individuals and families in the Durham area. Our residents are good people with good hearts. We want to help where we can."

"In addition to support for the DPD's Blue Benevolence community programs, many residents volunteer in Durham public schools and with various charities including Habitat for Humanity and the American Red Cross," adds Briggs. "Residents attended numerous meetings and wrote hundreds of letters in 2016 to convince both the City and County governments to build a new combined Fire and EMS Station on Leesville Road, which was the first time county ambulance and city fire services were co-located. I think I can speak for both Curt and myself in saying that we're proud to be a part of this community."

Located in Durham off Leesville Road, in close proximity to the intersection of Highway 70 and I-540, PulteGroup's Del Webb began construction on Carolina Arbors' 1,292 homes in 2013. Sales at the community were complete in early 2020, with homeowners consisting of active adults aged 55 and older.
