ASHEVILLE, N.C. - ncarol.com -- Before KayeDinero had a music catalog, there was an aquamarine.

The Detroit-raised, Asheville-based artist releases "Aquamarine" at midnight, turning her March birthstone into something more personal: a musical remembrance of herself, her birth month and her late grandmother, Audrey.

KayeDinero remembers her grandmother giving her what may have been her first aquamarine birthstone jewelry set—a sterling silver rope chain paired with an aquamarine charm.

Decades later, the stone has become a song.

"From what I remember, my grandmother Audrey gave me my first aquamarine birthstone set," KayeDinero said. "I remember the sterling silver rope chain and the charm. When I think about aquamarine, I don't just think about March. I think about her."

THE BIRTHSTONE BECOMES THE STORY

Aquamarine is the traditional birthstone for March.

Its name derives from the Latin words for water and sea, while the gemstone itself is the blue-to-greenish-blue variety of beryl—the same mineral family that includes emerald.

For centuries, aquamarine has also carried associations with water, protection and safe passage.

That history gives the title another layer for an artist whose recent work increasingly connects memory, place and nature.

"I like creating from things that already mean something to me," KayeDinero said. "A place, a memory, a person, a gemstone—it can all become music."

WHY AQUAMARINE FITS 2026

The release also arrives as personalized and story-driven jewelry is having a resurgence.

Jewelry-industry trend coverage this year has highlighted renewed interest in birthstones, heirloom-inspired pieces and jewelry carrying personal or family meaning.

For KayeDinero, however, "Aquamarine" is not following a trend.

The story was already there.

"My grandmother gave the stone meaning before I ever thought about turning that memory into art," she said.

AN INSTRUMENTAL FAMILY ALBUM

"Aquamarine" continues an increasingly autobiographical run that has included "Key-Air-Rah," "Detroit WestSide," "Starlight," "Appalachia," "French Broad" and "Banks."

Instead of explaining those memories through lyrics, KayeDinero has increasingly allowed instrumental music, titles and accompanying visuals to carry the narrative.

"Aquamarine is an ode to me, but it's also an ode to where some of that meaning came from," she said. "Sometimes somebody gives you something when you're young and you don't understand until much later how long you're going to carry it."
